Since 2006, Matt has worked in a wide range of roles in the renewable energy and biomass and waste fuels sectors. With a PhD in glacial/interglacial climate change from the University of Bristol he set up the renewable heating company Purple Energy in 2006 which installed commercial renewable heat and power technologies and went on to become Biomass Installer of the Year at the Heating + Renewables Awards in 2015.
His primary area of interest over recent years has been biomass and waste-derived fuels, and shortly after setting up the consultancy in 2016, Commercial Energy were contracted by the UK Pellet Council to administer the ENplus® wood pellet quality certification scheme in the UK.
At the start of 2019 Matt was elected to the board of the European Pellet Council, a position he still holds. The EPC, a part of Bioenergy Europe, is the voice of the wood pellet sector in Europe, and co-ordinates the development of the ENplus® scheme.
In August 2020 Matt joined Waste Knot Energy as their Commercial Director. WKE aim to produce SRF pellets for sale primarily to the cement and power industries. Matt was responsible for marketing and sales of the SRF pellets as well as working with waste suppliers to ensure the supply of adequate feedstock.
